Once you become a runner, you become a member of the running community. Races are not only good exercise, they are lots of fun! Meet up with friends, hear the roar of the crowd, munch on "free" snacks, and cheer on fellow racers. Even if you don't like to compete, it is a ball to watch friends run, volunteer at an aid station, or bask in the excitement of it all.
